:D

yup, a lot is. It's just current style I guess. But there's also a lot of daring desings. Sadly most architecture gets simpler and simpler from initial plans to definite plans due to cost limitations; design is always gonna lose from budget/ money

this was one of the plans for our new train station:

this is how it's gonna look like now, due to budget restraints:

still very nice, but you get the idea. That's why I decide I didnt wanne become an architect, way to frustrating!

we do have the biggest projects in Europe in Rotterdam

this building is called 'The Rotterdam' and is the largest construction project with 160000 square meters

it's a city on it's on with pools, stores, cinema, offices, everything. The municipality of Rotterdam has signed an agreement to rent 40000 square meters (a quarter of the available space) so it will be my new working spot in 2013, overlooking the city :D

proposed designs in Rotterdam:

the advantage is the Germans (and the English and Australians defending Rotterdam from the Germans) bombarded the shit out of our city center, so we had the opportunity to start all over again, as opposed to Amsterdam. Rotterdam is pretty much like Berlin in a sense :)

this one is being designed by German architects, right next to the building I did the license for this week:

I think you like it wurst? :D

YOU did? you mean you're powerful? :O
/me sucks up to dmmh

well, not powerful...it's just a job :-)

I just have to make sure the buildings are designed according to constuction, physics and fire safety regulation as well as that they follow Rotterdam's estethical guidelines and urban development planning rules...
Basically I make a lot of other people work hard for me so I can get project developers their permits in time.
For such a large project normally I normally have half a year to handle the permit for at least, I did the last one in 3 weeks. Which tbh is unheared of and I am very proud of myself. Almost gave me a heart attack though...

If I wouldnt have given them their permit, they would have missed out on 1.100.000 euro's of state funding and the Chinese ambassador would have come to Rotterdam for nothing to start the construction on july 1th. And I can only gibe that permit if I harrass the developer and have them adjust their designs over and over again until it is safe etc. And mostly, they don't want to, because it will cost them extra money, so ofcourse it's always discussions....

So no, I am not poweful, but it is a real big responsibility, making sure a building is safe and abides by all the legislation, local and state yet on the other hand keep the developer's economic interest at heart. Which is what I love about my job, trying to find a way to sort problems.
