Post subject:  So HELP ME!!! (please...)

Hi folks:

About new year's niogth i suffered a big system CRASH!!!! in my GNU/ Linux. That was my fault (if everything is fully functional, why the hell are u touching any man??).

System is pretty recovered (backup copy miracles, u know) but im not aable to run UT game: Evey time i try to do, i get sound, and a nice black screen... Some like 'Out of frecuency' message in my powered- off monitor...

So i was looking around, asking to uncle Google, and i have some info about wrong resolution configuration parameters. But solutions given are not fine 4 me... SOZ...

Results: Im not able to run my UT, even a new copy downloaded from UT home. So im not able to join you as every day... BUAHHHH!!!!!

Can i have some help, please?

Regards

Yeah, i had same thing like that..... But it's not every time to my, its just sometimes, like UrT isn't focused...... I plays sound and sometimes first animation, and then crashes. I reduced number of those by lowering resolution from 1280x1024 to 1024x768. Another thing is to try clicking (left click) when UrT is starting. So when first black screen shows, and sound starts try clicking......

If that doesn't work try disabling screensaver.....

je if sound is running ok, i think the game itself runs pretty well and just ur monitor dont support the resolution/frequency
id look the gugel for that, theres video resolution setting in urt config for sure.

im sry that i cant rly help, i had once a linux kde desktop (when i was younger and more full with politicismism)
i know that quake3 makes some weired weapon switching when u walk backwards and jump. and there was some with the sound.
i remember that it was allways a good idea to have nvidia grafix card...

ah btw some noobish thing...
maybe u didnt klick "yes" for nvidia proprietary driver?
i mean it can be that theres no grafix card installed?
if it ran before in same hard-and software its unlikely that now is some config wrong...
just an idea, so often i tryed to repair a machine that simply had no electricity cause i was "unplugged like the guitar-eric".

Make sure to look into your xorg.conf (Assuming you're using x.org) that your monitor is not set up there with a too high frequency. That might be the problem, when UrT starts, it changes the resolution and is using a mode that was set up in the xorg.conf but that your monitor doesn't support. If you're unsure, test all of the resolutions and frequencies in combination that are listed within the xorg.conf. If any of those turns out to give you the same results, then you finally know which of the settings are wrong. Just remove the frequency from the list in that case (monitor section) and UrT should be starting fine.

Your description is a bit vague though and there might be plenty of other causes for it, just as wurst said, not using proprietary drivers, not having configured your monitor properly etc.
Especially if you're using a display (lcd) you might not want to use a frequency of more than 60hz.

Well, u are rigth man: If sound, game is executing. Problem was in resolutioin, as u appointed so well.

I have not politic ideas at all. Just i think all of them are thieves, and no care who the hell get the power: There is always same results...

I have a GNU/ Linux cause i prefer free soft to piracy and virus. No more. I know what the price is, and i assume :-)

But it still being a good idea bet for Nvidia 4 GNU/ Linux. ATI cards have support too, of course... But less, in my opinion.

Well... Thanks 4 the advice. LOL...

Ok folks, i managed to run properly UT in my old monitor, and im ready to join the action back. Problemm was a combination of resolution, Compiz and Xinerama's malfunction.

Thanks all.
