...is bliss (Check the netgraph)

Probably due to auto-sweeping. During that time (5 secondes, every 2 or 3 minutes), I cannot do anything (mumble and UrT get all laggy). Any idea? (Linux 2.6.32/Ubuntu 10.04)

are you sure urt AND mumble are laggy or just UrT, if it is only UrT i am sure its something unexplainable with the wlan-card

I had this for months on Ubuntu 10.04, it drove me nuts. I never found the cause but since upgrading to 12.04 the problem went away.

It is NetworkManager's fault. It sweeps for available networks each now and then causing practically a C.I. that lasts a few seconds each now and then.

I had that problem back when I was playing on laptop. At first, I bought a switch so I could share AimMe's long network cable (we were sharing the room at the time).

But, one dark stormy night (I will never forget that horrible night, still gives me creeps) I left my laptop on overnight. A lighting stroke and killed my laptop's Ethernet card, as well as the port on the switch which my laptop was connected to. The corresponding LED on my switch still shines in memorial of that late Ethernet card, even though there's no cable being plugged into that port anymore.

Anyway, due to the incident with my Ethernet card, I was forced to play with WLAN again.

So I built myself a script that would deactivate Network Manager and connect manually to my home network using iwconfig so I could play UrT without lags. Look into the man pages of iwconfig. Also, depending on your WLAN drivers, you may have to be root (using su or sudo) to use iwconfig (to it's full potential).

and ure reallyreallyreally sure theres *no*booldy*way* to have a serious (and cheap) cable?
thinkabout:

u dont need a fat cat 5-6-7 cable:
- 10 Mbit just need 4 wires.
- telephone wires are often drilled in pairs (required), such wires can be hidden much better under carpets etc.
- cable without shielding is ok for ~ 100-200m, even with cheap realtek adapt0rs, even with hard 90° "folding".

ethernet over power:
theres some "ethernet-over-power" boxes with impressive latency, they work like the old "babyphones", they use free 70cm-Range.
it would be important to check a "good one".

dsl:
yes, u can have a pppoe connection, it needs only 2 wires.
an old notebook can be the "DSLAM", at the client side u would need a DSL modem.
theres alot of cheap old dsl modems...

else:
- check other channels
- consider directional antenna(s)
- thinkabout how much concrete and steel is between ur antenna and the access point, maybe consider a usb wlan stick and 5m usb extension cable.

Oh good to know. I didn't know this was proper to 10.04.

Nice. Didn't know it was network-manager. I'll see to it (Perhaps there is an upgrade for network-manager even if you're not on 12.04? Since that problem doesn't exist on that version, cf. supra).

Nope can't; the current configuration cannot be changed although it is technically improvable by your solutions. I have a desktop computer, with a wi-fi antenna that looks like this plugged into a PCI card, but the problem isn't directly with the reception as natirips and neep pointed out. Thanks!

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04. I set Network-Manager back to check if it would work : and no, it wouldn't, same shitty behaviour, so I guess I'll have to stick with iwconfig...

Even worse (the wi-fi issue is not such a big problem), I do not seem to be able to switch weapons with MOUSEWHEEL when my player's speed is varying (ie. I can only switch weapons when I don't move or move at a very steady pace). I thought it was a networking issue, but I happen to have the same problem locally (on /devmap) Switching weapons works just fine with other keys though. Any idea? I have a Microsoft ReadyMouse that worked just fine on 10.04. :|

EDIT: after further investigations, it seems that problem occurs when I am moving my mouse. When I am not moving it, switching weapons works perfectly.

EDIT2: This may be the issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=138322
