Well i decided to give AMD another shot so i bought that athlon based computer. It's taking a crap load of tme for UrT to install tho, maybe something to do with the win 7, i have to scratch that crap and install XP.

I heard some people say that Vista is great for them.

Oh, and don't throw away Windows 7, did you know that you can see two windows next to each other at the same time in 7?

I already installed XP but it looks like I'll be digging through the DVD's to find win7 after all.
I tried extracting a 1GB archive under win 7 today, and it took it like 2 minutes to do it. When i reinstalled XP sp3 that same archive took 30 minutes to extract. Why the heck did that happen, anyone got an idea?

I have 4 USB ports on the back side of the computer. I connect my external HDD to 2 of them. When i try to extract an archive inside of it or copy something from it to the built int HDD it takes a long time to copy or extract.
I have a dell monitor with 4 USB ports, i unplugged the HDD from the computer and plugged it in the monitor USB ports. The monitor itself uses a USB cable to connect to the computer, but this time extracting an archive or copying it takes only few minutes.
Why? What difference does it makes if i will connect the HDD directly in the computer or in the monitor USB ports. I don't understand.

Windows. Nobody understands why.
But on linux can be similar too.

We don't have to understand why, we just have to know how it is. So use monitor then :)

Might be because your monitor uses USB 2.0, and the other ports on your backpanel are 1.1.

My laptop (for example) has 2x USB2.0 and 2xUSB1.1 ports.
Code:
natirips@nati-lap:~/Desktop$ lspci|grep USB
00:02.0 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation MCP67 OHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev a2)
00:02.1 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation MCP67 EHCI USB 2.0 Controller (rev a2)
00:04.0 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation MCP67 OHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev a2)
00:04.1 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation MCP67 EHCI USB 2.0 Controller (rev a2)
natirips@nati-lap:~/Desktop$

Try experimenting with different ports, they might not be all the same.

I did, i plugged it in those4 ports on the computer in every possible way and the result was always the same. But even if monitor USB is 2.0 the one the computer is still 1.1 it be a bottleneck wouldn't it.

Then it's most likely a feature. You system has special drivers for that device, but when you plug it through the monitor it probably doesn't detect it properly* and uses (faster) generic drivers.

*I.e. my HP mice becomes Logitech when I plug it into my G15's USB:

Code:
natirips@nati-lap:~/Desktop$ lsusb|grep Mouse
Bus 003 Device 004: ID 046d:c016 Logitech, Inc. Optical Wheel Mouse
natirips@nati-lap:~/Desktop$

@Rayne: Could it be the noise of the ventilators affecting the disk when you plug it directly into computer casing, but the noise would be lower when you plug it into the monitor?

It is summer, if the vents are noisy and the HDD directly next to them, you never know.

That would also explain the difference why it's faster on XP, as XP is older and thus less resource intense for the same hardware, thus the computer would be cooler and vents would spin at lower speed producing less noise.

I think i figured it out (i sure as hell hope so). 3 out of 4 USB in the back are 1.1 and only one of em is 2.0. So when i plugged the HDD into the comp directly, i always 1 USB 1.1. Now I"m using that 2.0 to power the monitor USBs and the thing works. But the 1.1 has a maximum speed of 12 mb/s but the maximum speed i managed to get with it was way under 1mb/s.
Hell if that thing was working on 12 I'd be thrilled.
