It's probably because this technology is quite new (when ABC and ENIAC were built, they didn't go into mass production just yet). But I also guess this will be going on large scale soon.

Except, so far holograms can't give you an autograph. But, then again, you could download their autograph... ;)

Hehe, found the very same artist a few days ago:-)

Did you know that holograms actually exist outside Star Trek and the likes?

*Waves furiously* Yo. First described and attempted at in the thirties, fully realized in the fifties, when laser was invented. That's not to say that you'd need laser; reflecting and intersecting coherent wavefronts are just the most convenient way to capture the shape of a real-world object. For artificial stuff, like logos and alphanumerals, transparent plastic with embossed grooves is just fine, with reflective foil providing backlight. As the term is used somewhat loosely, not necessitating the use of interference patterns to qualify, it is in fact entirely possible to draw a hologram by hand -- called "specular holograms", these utilize glare points in semi-circular grooves to create an illusion of dot-cloud object.

But you can see the projection from different angles and it is thus a 3D projection, which is the very definition of a hologram - wholepicture.

Pffft. It's like saying that binoculars are the very definition of a TV set, allowing you to see far. In fact, you can see the image on a [TV] screen from different angles, and you can even see the object depicted from different angles -- if the camera's moving around it. This projection acts like any other 2D image; depending on your viewpoint, she would appear stretched or squashed. And no, you can't see under her skirt, quit trying:-) Funnily enough, actual holograms are characterized by the fact that you can't see them from every angle; they're the equivalent of reliefs, not sculptures.

natirips wrote:
I didn't say that it can walk around among people like an EMG from the Star Trek, but they might find a way to project it into the air in the future.

Into the air? Well, if you have sufficiently powerful lasers, and focus them correctly, and have the beams to intersect and move in sync... hello, hot plasma girl:-) But no, as far as I know, this is impossible -- the air's way too transparent. (In case you're wondering, in real holograms the interference pattern is projected directly onto you retina.) Real-life volumetric displays need stuff like fine mist, or smoke, or a glass/plastic cube/sphere to project the image onto. You can't make light hover.

Actually I find it rather weird that people are concentrating on the decidedly uninteresting aspects of virtual personalities. Voice synthesis has been around from at least the seventies (and vocoders, while not strictly "synthesis", originate from the forties); rear projection is older than projectors (google "Pepper's ghost"); and virtual personalities are as old as storytelling (people can get really worked up over the life and death of some guy who hasn't existed and never will). Much more interesting -- and somewhat unnerving -- is their impact on the society, as people are entirely capable of relating to someone who hasn't even the intelligence of a cockroach, much less any emotions. Having the artificial personality shaped as a cute teenage girl is taking advantage of this very fact.

BTW, the first mostly virtual (drawn, voiced by an actress) idoru appeared about the same time William Gibson was writing Idoru.

As the camera moves around she doesn't look stretched/squished at all. Also, notice that people are all around the stage, meaning they can see her from all sides. It's a 3D hologram in a 3D world projected into a 3D piece of space.

Oh, and don't get me wrong, I just like the idea of a 3D picture. As for Miku, I came across many much more attractive virtual women so far.

Edit (took me a few minutes to find this): I also like holograms like this one:

Not "all around the stage", but only in front of it (their glow sticks reflect on the screen). You notice that the camera never moves very far from straight front view, mostly avoiding distorting the projection (members of the audience very close to the stage and/or in the foremost corners of the hall have it much worse).

Anyway, the most effective way to prove my point is...

...showing miss 初音ミク on stage with the band members! Here you go:

Another technology used in live concerts (notably, to bring Gorillaz onto stage) is the Musion Eyeliner 3D (what a name^_^) That utilizes the same Pepper's ghost principle mentioned above. In case you have live performance reflecting on the glass, the illusion behaves very much like a real 3D image; when your viewpoint moves (not too much!), different parts of the subject appear to move in respect to each other (covering each other etc). Well, exactly the same way you see your reflection move in a mirror.

Who wouldn't...

Yup. Swept-volume display, these are called; a kind of volumetric display encased in a transparent sphere or cylinder. One of the oldest ones in the book; I suppose that once you can do Nipkow disk, you can do this.

*gasp* I can't believe my eyes got cheated just like that :O . It's like not noticing a wallhack after seeing someone track through walls.

ROFL. When I said

I didn't actually mean it seriously. Really, open plasma on your desk? But funnily enough, Japanese (again) are actually developing such a display. It only allows 100 dots per second right now, which doesn't make for a detailed image, but still... And it only needs a single laser.

Another cool thing, as close to mediumless projection as you get, is Heliodisplay (company's official materials seem to consist of friendly lowest common denominator-oriented yadda yadda yadda, sounding more like some New Age shit than a real product).

natirips wrote:

Pretty much the point of using this method... Having seen so many SFX "holograms" one naturally assumes that a glowy girl on the stage is something like this.

BTW, real-life animated holograms. Utilizing light-sensitive plastic, somewhat similar to writable optical disks.
