Chinese there are lots of linux live-dvd's, which means you can just boot the complete OS from a DVD without to install anything.

Just give it a try ;)

Or if you don't like big downloads, there are live distros on a CD, and a few minimalistic ones that fit on less than 50MB. Try Ubuntu or Knoppix for a start. Knoppix a pure-live distribution (you can't install it, it only runs from CD/DVD) while Ubuntu can be installed on your computer as a regular operating system at your option. Just google for them (or google for "linux live CD") and I'm sure you'll find some.

I never said it was impossible. It's just that not many people do that as it was not originally meant to be installed. And besides, IMO someone who's absolutely new to Linux shouldn't start by installing Knoppix onto HDD.

I do know that when it comes to Linux, you can do with it whatever you want, at least as long as you are skilled enough to do so. :D
